Monetary contributions or goods and services provided to a political party, constituency association, candidate or leadership contestant are eligible for tax receipts. Contributions given to a nomination contestant, or a third party are not eligible for tax receipts.

Only individuals who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents are permitted to make political contributions. Corporations, unions, and organizations are prohibited from donating to federal political entities, including MPs, political parties, and candidates.

To encourage individual participation, the federal government offers tax credits for political contributions:Wikipedia

  • 75% on the first $400.

  • 50% on the portion between $400 and $750.

  • 33.33% on amounts over $750, up to a maximum credit of $650 per year.

Elections Canada

  • Up to $1,725 to each registered political party.

  • Up to $1,725 collectively to all of a party’s riding associations, nomination contestants, and candidates.

  • Up to $1,725 collectively to all leadership contestants in a party.

  • Up to $1,725 to each independent candidate.
